Thaw

Oil on canvas, 71x75cm, 2023, Currently Available via Blue Tree Gallery, York

Inspired by a cold, foggy day in Lancashire in about 2010 and a set of photographs I took on my dodgy phone camera at the time.

It’s another safe space, fenced off from the rest of the world. The obscure distance fades into the fog. The heat and thaw is coming: you can see it in the wet highlights on the ground. But for now we still have our crisp snow underfoot and the sky is frozen in time.

One poignant thing for me is that I know my dog, Scout, was with me in this scene. She died just over a year ago, but I still miss having her by my side.
