Tempestarii

This series explores storm creation, trying to capture that foreboding feeling of electricity in the atmosphere. There is tension and a sense of threat lurking in the near future. This is nature's revenge upon us.

Inspired by old folklore of weather witches called Tempestarii, who were said to control the weather, this collection challenges us to consider if we are the modern day weather witches, irreparably changing our climate and causing weather catastrophes in our wake.

Tempestarius by Charley Hellier, an abstract piece of art depicting a yellowing purple sky, smoothly blended, with a textured cacophony below it. Black, green, red, purple and white clash and compete. A sinister figure seems to emerge from the landscape, or perhaps it's just a tree. The artwork is produced with a palette knife and several scratching tools - craft knife, clay tools and sponge.

Charged by Charley Hellier is an abstract piece of artwork, painted in oils on a small wood panel. It depicts the beginnings of an electrical storm, the lightning seeming to come out of the landscape and rising to the right, through a dark grey cloud. The sky is a smooth blend of blue, grey and white. The land is abstract, with jagged black and white, running into yellow. Hints of purple, reflecting the heather of the North York Moors are present, with greens and red. It is quite a sparce, minimalist painting.

This is a small painting in almost monochrome palette. It shows a stormy sky and the wind whipping about the trees in a Winter landscape. the trees are dark against the light grey of the clouds. The foreground is almost black and has been scratched into.

Ominous by Charley Hellier, a painting in oil on canvas. A foreboding stormy sky blends from blinding white to dark almost black grey. The skyscape takes up much of the canvas, which is in portrait orientation, until it meets the ground, vague and blurred. Hints of foliage appear in greens and purples, in abstract textures. A dark, silhouetted figure emerges from the landscape, seemingly growing into it like a tree. There is no face - it is scratchy and vague in form.

Unstilnes by Charley Hellier. A brooding, atmospheric piece, inspired by the North York Moors, Yorkshire. A vast stormy sky rolls overhead. A dark, smokey horizon sweeps across in earthy browns and greys, moving to greens and purples in the foreground, with flecks of white. Electricity seems to build from the ground, being drawn up by what may be large shrubs or figures. These are the Tempestarii. Boggy ground makes way to a natural pond in the centre. The wind whips around the long grasses and reeds. This painting is in oil on wood panel, measuring 30x20".
