Ragwort

Oil on wood panel, 30x20", 2023, Currently Available via Blue Tree Gallery, York

This one is inspired by Cringle Moor, near Carlton Bank. Don’t get me wrong, I love the views from the moors. I even love the visual effect of the patchwork of farmed fields spread out below. But the farmland makes for an industrial landscape and the heath itself is managed.

Up the hill were ragwort plants here and there, an accident standing tall, opposing the purple of the blooming heather. Their reputation in tatters, because they are considered by many as a poisonous weed to root out and destroy, harmful to livestock and infiltrating crop plants. Tell that to the cinnabar moth.
