The Chaos/Control series came about after a challenge within an art group to create a non-representational self portrait. I find I am characterised by the internal pull of chaos and control: this is something often reflected in how I go about creating art and usually dependent on my mental state. After laying down a brash, fiery base of chaotic mess, spattering and throwing paint down, I placed next to it some very calm geometric shapes in a cool palette.
Quickly, I realised that this dichotomy of chaos and control is present in everything: ourselves, society, politics, nature, Earth, the solar system, the universe and so on. I started to work on different compositions of the idea and it grew into a series.
