Yorkshire Moors Paintings

These, almost representational, pieces celebrate the wild feeling of the Yorkshire Moors, mainly the North York Moors.

I've spent a lot of my life roaming these landscapes in all manner of weather. The drama of the changeable views and all the stories that have come from them bring inspiration to all of my works in some way.

Hunter by Charley Hellier, oil on canvas, an atmospheric piece showing a river running through a bleak, barren landscape. The sky is dramatic in white and grey. The ground is in greens, purples and browns. Based on the Yorkshire landscape, North York Moors. There is a heron fishing in the river not far away.

This painting depicts an autumn scene with the wind blowing leaves from a tree and bending several other trees. The tree is in brown, red and yellow against a grey, white and blue stormy sky. the foreground is a muddy Yorkshire Moors path lined with dark and light greens. It is a post impressionist imagined landscape based on the North York Moors.

Unseen by Charley Hellier

Untrodden, an imagined, abstract landscape, based partly on places around North Yorkshire and the North York Moors national park. A swamp on a cloudy day, a big white fluffy cloud bank towers over the swamp, reflected in the water. Foliage lines the banks in boggy ground, with trees seen through mist in the distance. A lone bird, possibly a crow, perches on the edge of the water. The colours are cold and the palette limited, with dark, earthy greens, whites and light blues and a hint of red.

Absence by Charley Hellier, a snowy scene, painted in oil paints on wood panel, shows mainly white, with some blue and grey forming the sky. green and dark foliage stick up through the snow. There is a rabbit or hare, waiting and watching.

Abundance by Charley Hellier, a warm summer painting in oil paint on wood panel, showing a meadow with flowers, grass and moths, reaching for a yellow sunset sky.

Bluebells by Charley Hellier. A painting inspired by the North York Moors and Kilburn Forest near Sutton Bank. The scene shows a forest of trees, dark brown silhouettes. Green leaves in the canopy with light coming through. On the ground is a carpet of bluebells in dark blue, light blue and purple. The near foreground is mud brown with greens and yellows. It is a semi-abstract piece with scratches in the acrylic paint. Post-impressionist.

Ephemeral Bloom, a painting of a meadow with flowers in red, blue and yellow against a burning soft yellow sky. Rich greens trail into darkness of undergrowth.
